Stephanie and her family recently visited the amazing Crayfish Catcher in Paternoster.
Bright and early on a chilly winter’s morning, we packed up our goodies and loaded up the car to set out on our much anticipated journey along the West Coast to the beautiful town of Paternoster for the weekend.
This wonderful coastal town, located only 1 hour and 40 minutes from Cape Town, is known for its quaint and charming West Coast feel, with its white-washed fishermen’s cottages and colourful fishing boats moored on the sandy beaches. The people of Paternoster typify the West Coast spirit of hospitality and welcoming spirit, and Paternoster is in fact the oldest fishing village on the West Coast. Visitors can buy fresh fish directly from the fishermen, with good catches of snoek in winter and crayfish in summer.
The name Paternoster comes from the Latin for ‘Our Father’ and is believed to refer to the prayers made by Portuguese sailors who became shipwrecked along the coast.
After the lovely scenic drive up the coast we arrived at the Paternoster Rentals office to collect our keys around 2pm and were shown to our home for the weekend – The Crayfish Catcher, situated only 20m from the main beach and within walking distance to all the shops and lovely restaurants the quaint little village has to offer.
Our trip to this area was planned in the heart of winter, but to our surprise on arrival we were greeted with the most amazing weather – warm and refreshing, with a very slight cool breeze and not a cloud above in the azure blue sky.
This incredible holiday home boasts a main bedroom with en-suite bathroom, as well as another 2 bedrooms with 4 single beds and another bathroom.
It has a cosy lounge with a huge fireplace, large screen TV with full DSTV package and an amazing spacious, undercover patio with built in braai.
This unit is also fully equipped and is home to a lovely easy to use kitchen and even boasts underfloor heating, perfect for those chilly winter months.
The house is beautifully decorated with magical nautical themed pieces, adding to the relaxed sea-side town feel.
After unpacking and settling in, we headed off to the nearby beach to do a little exploring, before heading back to the house for a light lunch.
After lunch we decided to unwind in the living room and watched some TV before heading off for a much needed nap.
We awoke later that evening and promptly started on supper – some delicious braaied snoek and salads, which we grilled out on the fire in the nifty outdoor braai area. After enjoying some sundowners we headed in to freshen up and called it a night.
It is always such a pleasure to stay in a seaside town – the best part for me is falling asleep while listing to the sound of the nearby waves – incredibly relaxing and therapeutic.
The next morning we were up early preparing a full house breakfast, which we enjoyed out in the morning sun on the patio, admiring our beautiful surroundings.
A little while later we ventured out to a nearby market, filled with many little treasures.
We then headed off to the beach again to dip our toes into the water and relax out in the sun for a while. We also headed to a nearby shop for some soft-serve ice-cream, perfect for the hot day we’d been having.
Later we headed back home to wind down in front of the TV with a few drinks. As evening approached we felt a little chilly so switched on the magnificent underfloor heating and lit a cosy fire in the large fireplace in the lounge area.
For supper we enjoyed a variety of braaied meats and salads. Appetites satisfied, we chatted with each other over some wine in front of the toasty fire before heading off to dreamland.
The next morning we awoke refreshed and again whipped up a delicious brekkie before packing up all of our goodies and heading home.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Crayfish Catcher. We have totally fallen in love with the amazing town of Paternoster and cannot wait to return for our next family holiday here.
