Leipzig Country House

Lindsay recently visited the charming Leipzig Country House in Worcester where she enjoyed relaxing over an unforgettable weekend at this picturesque diamond in the rough.

Off the beaten track, surrounded by vineyards, and housing some of the best wine I have ever tasted, Leipzig Country House near Worcester is one of the most memorable country getaways you can treat yourself to. We thoroughly enjoyed a weekend of amazing food, quiet countryside and personalized service at this rustic gem in the Breede River Valley.

We arrived at Leipzig Country House in the late evening thanks to Cape Town's Friday traffic. Although we hadn't made previous arrangements for a late check-in, our key was neatly waiting for us at reception and the head chef showed us to our room.

Upon entering our room, we were greeted by a complimentary bottle of Leipzig's viognir and jar of homemade chutney. Our king size bedroom was very spacious and neat.

We enjoyed a delicious three-course meal of salmon, duck, meringue and exceptional White Leipzig in a private dining area that evening. I can highly recommend booking a dinner at Leipzig during your stay! My personal favourite was not only the private and attentive service - but also the surprise of a complimentary jar of jam upon discovering it was my birthday.

Before retiring for the evening, we marvelled at how clearly we could see the stars on the short walk back to our room - a sign of a true country getaway (another sign being the bullfrog greeting us at our room door but that wasn't as scenic as the stars to look at).

The next morning we took a casual stroll to the breakfast room where we enjoyed a cooked breakfast with sides of watermelon and croissants. After breakfast we bumped into manageress Alida who gave us a little info on the winery, the names of the resident and adorably friendly dogs, and led us to their tortoise sanctuary - where they house a multitude tortoises big and small.

We were hoping to spend the Saturday morning at the Blindiana Museum - South Africa's first blind museum. Much to our disappointment we discovered upon arrival it's closed over the weekend which leaves you with the option of wine tasting, more wine tasting, or driving through to Robertson.

Instead, we decided to do some olive oil tasting at Willow Creek Estate just down the road from Leipzig - a must-do when you're in the area. Thanks to the advertising multitude of posters around town, we then visited the Worcester Kersfeesmark (Christmas market). Here we were surrounded by charming Worcester arts and crafts, jewelry, food and more. For this city girl, it was lovely to spend part of my day at a true South African small town craft market!

Not really in the mood to drink wine other than Leipzig's, we spent the rest of our afternoon at the new and expansive Mountain Mill Mall just outside Worcester. Here we escaped the near 40 degree heat and enjoyed a late lunch.

Returning to Leipzig, we watched the sunset over the vineyards by the pool with one last glass of White Leipzig (be sure to get your hands on a bottle if you can) (and then send it to me). We then called it a night and played cards on our patio surrounded by the quiet of the country.

My only regret from the weekend was not enjoying one of Leipzig's "Wine Sleepovers" on Saturday night. Happening almost monthly, these famed evenings include a 5 course dinner paired with 5 Leipzig wines, as well as history and chats from the winery manager and head chef. We'll definitely be back to Leipzig for one of these - as if we needed an excuse to visit again!
