Cindy recently enjoyed a wonderful weekend stay at Orange Grove Farm in Robertson with her family.
After driving just a couple of hours from Cape Town, we arrived in the dark at Orange Grove Farm on the outskirts of Robertson. Our greeting from the night manager was so bright and cheerful that we immediately felt right at home.
Nestled at the foothills of Babbedasberg which forms part of the Langeberg Mountains, Orange Grove Farm is surrounded by majestic rock formations, crystal clear waterfalls, and an abundance of fauna and flora. It is a working wine and olive farm situated in the heart of this beautiful area and is the ideal place to relax and rejuvenate with the whole family in a truly laid-back country style.
Our FineView cottage boasted two bedrooms with Queen sized beds and another room with a single bed – perfect for our family of five. There was a spacious lounge with fire place, a fully kitted out kitchen and an undercover braai area outside. Now, not all self catering establishments are made equal and Orange Grove stands far above the rest for all the thought that they have put into their guests’ experience - free wifi, towels for both bathing and swimming, copious amounts of firewood (and firelighters), wonderful smelling lotions and shampoos (made on the farm), DSTV and aircon to name a few. Plus, there are also the extra little touches that make the stay so much more homey – a print out of the expected weather conditions for your stay, balsamic vinegar and olive oil, serviettes and someone that comes to clean up your cottage at a convenient time for you every day.
The cottage also has the best of the views at Orange Grove Farm and when we woke up in the morning to enjoy them, they did not disappoint! There is just something magical about drinking your morning coffee while overlooking an expanse of vineyards and olive trees.
In the morning we made a big fire and sipped our coffee while our kids played with their Lego and then we headed out to find some breakfast. We stopped at Rooiberg Farm which is so close to Orange Grove that if we’d been inclined to walk a bit, we could have done. They have a huge outdoor play area, freshly baked goodies and hearty breakfasts. The perfect stop.
We bundled back into the car and headed into Robertson – only about 15 minutes drive away – to stock up on braai goodies. There is a Super Spar and a Pick n Pay to choose from and plenty of coffee shop options to stop at along the way. My favourite of all has to be Spaces – not only can you buy lots of gorgeous home decor but they have really delicious hot chocolate.
Once we were back at the farm we put on our walking shoes and headed towards the dam. Along the way we crossed dried up river beds and spotted a couple of buck and a zebra. The kids really enjoyed the walk and the fresh air.
The next morning we woke up to discover the farm covered in mist which was so lovely to watch from the warmth of our bed. After a quick breakfast, it was time to say good bye to Orange Grove Farm. But not for long. It was such a great find, we will definitely be going back again soon!
