Lucille and her family recently enjoyed an amazing stay at Phezulu Safari Park in Botha's Hill.

My family’s first ever visit to Kwa - Zulu Natal was all we imagined and more and it could not have been a more awesome experience than what we were treated to at Phezulu Safari Park.
After a fun-filled and thrilling day in the waters at the renowned Ushaka Marine world (located approximately 30 minutes from the park), and arriving rather late for checking in, we were warmly welcomed and greeted by the friendly and helpful staff at Phezulu Safari Park which is located in Botha’s Hill, only 35km from Durban.
The sun had already set by the time we arrived and we were taken to our Acacia Tree Chalet, set atop one of the breathtakingly beautiful green hills and overlooking the picturesque “Valley of 1000 Hills”.
Upon arriving at the gorgeous traditional thatched chalet, the beautiful amber lights on the porch lit up a most inviting braai area, where we had our evening meal. The chalet, resembling a customary Zulu hut, was stunningly and stylishly fitted with all we needed for a luxurious bath or shower (the 2 bedroom, six-sleeper had both – an en-suite bathroom for the main bedroom and an en-suite shower for the 2nd bedroom). The main bedroom boasted a lovely queen size bed and the 2nd bedroom two beautifully neat single beds.
The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare our meals and there was even a television for the kids (some traditional technology for those no Wi-Fi withdrawal symptoms!). Unsurprisingly, the magnificence of Phezulu had us all so captivated that we wouldn’t have time for TV.
Having been spoilt with the experience of seeing and interacting with fantastic sea creatures at the aquarium the previous day, we were whisked away to the unbelievable experience and intimate views of the bush. Sihle, our very well informed and highly knowledgeable tour guide/ranger, escorted us in an open 4x4 on a fantastic safari drive, where we were fortunate to see most of the wild animals the park had to offer. Springbok, blue wildebeest, zebra, impala, kudu and the incredibly tall giant of the wild, the giraffe, to name but a few.
Not to mention the amazing bird life – and a great variety of plant species. Sihle was full of information and explained how the Euphorbia tree was used by Zulu warriors to tip their spears with poison.
After the hour long safari we were treated to a presentation of traditional Zulu dancing and a delightful demonstration of traditional Zulu culture, food and way of life.
Due to our busy schedule, we were only able to stay at Phezula for one day, but the staff were very accommodating and gave us the ability to also experience an informative tour of the reptile park, home to some remarkable creatures including a 96 year old, 400kg Nile crocodile named Ramsey and his 46 year old partner, Cleopatra. The “kids” loved interacting with the iguana’s and baby alligators and the astonishing display of snakes made for an educational trip … for the adults to (shhh don’t tell the kids).
With so much to do we needed a few extra days at least to enjoy the simple pleasures of a stroll through the park, some fun on the slide and see-saw or a refreshing swim in the beautifully blue swimming pool.
Phezulu offers so much more, including a wonderful little curio shop exhibiting both local and international arts and crafts and a magnificent 16-sleeper lodge with superb living space and entertainment areas for those who are looking for a perfect function venue.
Guests staying at Phezula’s accommodation receive complimentary 10% discount vouchers for activities at the park. This Safari Park certainly lives up to its name and is Phezulu, which means “Top” notch!
