Amazing stay at the River Manor Boutique Hotel and Spa

Last updated: Nov 22, 2017

Ross and Vanessa recently had the pleasure of staying at the River Manor Boutique Hotel and Spa in Stellenbosch.

Set in a quiet road lined with ancient oaks, and a stone’s throw from the Eerste River, sits the River Manor Boutique Hotel and Spa. Whether it’s a romantic getaway, or simply quintessential South African hospitality that you are after, this is the destination for you. Met by two perfectly tailored, smiling gentleman, we were warmly welcomed to the establishment. After a quick and efficient check-in, we were shown to our room and allowed to settle in. The owners of the Manor clearly appreciate that one does not get a second chance to create a first impression – the muted tones, well-placed antiques counterpoised by stylish contemporary pieces, together with elegant soft furnishings and adornments, create a restful atmosphere steeped in luxury.

We were fortunate to be accommodated in a Deluxe room – a beautifully appointed and spacious suite overlooking the river. The more modern choice of a grey and white palate was offset by robust satin curtains in pale gold, which together with the ball and claw Victorian bath in the generously proportioned ensuite - helped to create a romantic feel of yesteryear. Unfortunately, the Cape Town water restrictions prevented us from enjoying the enormous bath, but we did enjoy the complimentary Charlotte Rhys products during our “sub 3-minute shower” later in the evening.

After a revitalising cup of tea and complimentary nougat in the lounge area of the suite, we headed out to explore the rest of the manor house and grounds. At first glance, the two swimming pools and sun loungers seem to be the focal point of the outdoor area, but upon closer inspection, it’s the abundance of blossoming potted plants, neat little hedges and topiary trees that set the scene (all appropriately water-wise). There are pretty tables and chairs and comfy loungers strategically placed to encourage guests to make the most of the beautifully maintained and well-manicured property. Due to the chilly weather, we declined the offer of a swim, but rather enjoyed watching a brave Aussie take to the water for a super-quick dip.

As the Spa was not yet operational, we headed out into the heart of the winelands in search of a much-needed massage - returning to the Manor later that afternoon feeling suitably relaxed. We settled ourselves in a quiet spot to enjoy the evening sun. Not more than 5 minutes later, we were delighted by the arrival of two glasses of champagne, presented to us by a grinning and well-wishing hotel steward who had overheard at check-in that we were celebrating an anniversary of sorts.

The Manor does not have dining facilities, so instead we enjoyed an early meal at a local restaurant where we raised the average age of the patrons by at least 15 years. Thereafter (being a forty-something couple in desperate need of a night away from the zoo at home), rather than head into town in search of the night life, we opted to settled in the Manor house study in front of the fire for an obligatory pre-bed cup of tea. Eventually we made our way back to our room and settled in for a quiet night, without the usual children, cats, dogs or work demanding some level of attention.

After a fabulous sleep and uncharacteristically slow start to a Tuesday morning, we made our way down for breakfast – a generous offering of both continental and cooked, washed down with appropriately strong coffee.

We eked out our stay for as long as possible before we were compelled to make our way to our respective offices. River Manor will definitely be on our list for future quiet getaways, or even a quick stay over when work calls us out to the Stellenbosch region.
