A family-friendly stay at Rots En See, Franskraal

Last updated: Aug 01, 2018

Stephanie and her family recently visited the family-friendly Rots En See in Franskraal.

Holidaying in the Overberg region has been a yearly tradition for my family for as long as I can remember – it’s lovely to return to a familiar holiday destination – making new memories and fondly remembering previous visits. Recently we enjoyed a lovely weekend break at Rots En See self-catering villa in the welcoming seaside town of Franskraal (just past Gansbaai), conveniently located only 2 hours away from Cape Town.

Rots en See is a fully furnished house on the shoreline with a breath-taking view of the sea. There are five bedrooms and four bathrooms (3 en-suite) which means there is plenty of space for a big family or a group of friends and 12 guests can be accommodated. The spacious open plan kitchen (which is modern and fully equipped with all major appliances!) and living room leads to an indoor patio with a braai area.

The house is just a few meters from the water - being built on a rocky peninsula covered with natural vegetation and with 180° view of the sea.

On arrival we were warmly greeted by our friendly host Jan, who gave us a quick tour of the property and then left us to settle in.

After unpacking and refuelling with a quick snack, we headed out to do some exploring. We walked along the trails located just a stone’s throw away, dipped our toes in the sea and collected a few pretty sea shells long the way. My husband unpacked his fishing gear – we had been told this was a great fishing spot – and he spent some happy moments casting off the rocks.

After dinner, with the little ones in front of the TV, we tried out hand at some of the board games (thoughtfully left for us by our host), before heading off to bed.

Waking up to the sound of the ocean bright and early the next morning was a real delight. We awoke feeling super refreshed and headed into Gansbaai to pop into the well-known Gansbaai Farmer’s Market, held every Saturday from 9am to 2pm.

You can’t go to a market in South Africa and not find pancakes and we made sure to sample some delicious “pannekoek”, which were freshly made and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. A perfect accompaniment to our morning coffee! We bought a few other treats including some fresh free range eggs, freshly baked breads and cute goodies for the little ones too. It was the perfect way to spend the morning – with all the locals being super friendly and helpful.

Then it was time to head off to the beach where we admired the beautiful views and enjoyed the fresh sea air ... and some delicious ice-cream with sprinkles at the local “snoopy”.

There are plenty of attractions in the surrounding area to keep visitors busy and entertained. Gansbaai is well known for shark cage diving (I did this a few years ago and would definitely recommend it as something to experience at least once), whale watching during certain seasons and there are also more and more really good wine farms popping up in the area – including the nearby Lomond Wine Estate which is open for tastings Tuesday - Saturday.

After a fun-filled day out we headed back to the house to start preparing for supper. We enjoyed being able to use the indoor braai as the temperature dropped quickly outdoors. Relaxing and chatting in front of the fire was a great way to end the day before heading off to our spacious and comfy bedrooms.

We awoke on our last day and couldn’t help but feel a little sad to be leaving as we had really enjoyed a peaceful and relaxing weekend.

If you are looking for a fun family getaway near the sea in a friendly small town, then Rots En See is the perfect accommodation for you.

There is so much to do and see in this amazing part of the Overberg region, we will definitely be back again soon!
