Stephanie and her family recently visited the family-friendly Whales Tale in Hermanus.
Set along the Whale Coast, in the lovely seaside town of Hermanus sits Whales Tale – a luxurious self-catering holiday house which can accommodate a total of 10 guests.
This light-filled architectural masterpiece is fully equipped for a stress free holiday and is within walking distance of the famous Voëlklip beaches. We were lucky enough to spend a weekend at Whales Tale recently and absolutely loved the stylish décor and stunning views.
The house offers a luxurious main bedroom with a king size bed and en suite bathroom, two bedrooms with mountain views, and one family bedroom with a double bed plus a set of bunk beds.
The kitchen is beautifully designed and ensures guests have everything they need for a self-catering stay.
A spacious and bright lounge and dining room area boasts a really large fire place – sure to come in handy during the colder winter months.
All linen and towels are provided and there is satellite TV.
On arrival we were greeted by Justin, and after a quick and efficient tour of the house, we were left to settle in.
A delicious sushi and seafood dinner from a local restaurant was absolutely divine and the perfect way to kick-start our time away. A few sundowners on the deck back at Whales Tale allowed us to relax and soak up our surroundings.
We awoke the next morning bright and early to the gentle sounds of the waves in the distance, and feeling absolutely refreshed and ready for the day ahead.
After breakfast, we had a quick dip in the sparkling pool and then headed down to the beach for some fun and sunshine. While at the nearby Grotto Beach we were delighted to spot some whales – my 4-year old was convinced they were “waving” at her with their tails! Such an awesome sight! While the kids enjoyed the sand in their toes and splashing about in the sea, we relaxed under the umbrella admiring the lovely weather and blue sky.
Before leaving the beach we popped in to a nearby shop for some soft-serve ice-cream - perfect for a hot and sunny day.
After all of that fun in the sun we headed back to the house to unwind – followed by the ‘essential’ holiday afternoon nap before lighting the fire on the deck for our evening braai. Again we sipped on a few sundowners while watching a truly beautiful sunset.
The next morning we spent some time in town and made our way to the Old Harbour where we once again spotted a whale! We browsed the local market stalls and visited the very interesting Whale Museum.
Hermanus really is a gem, and has so much to offer. It is said to have the best land-based whale watching in the country and thousands of visitors pass through the town between August and October each year when the giant Southern Right Whales calve in the bay. The Whale Festival held annually in September offers music, entertainment and activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Besides lovely long beaches and sheltered sandy coves, Hermanus is also ideal for boating and canoeing on the lagoon, as well as hiking in the beautiful Fernkloof Nature Reserve – home to a great variety of Fynbos. The popular cliff-top path that follows the coastline offers perfect vantage points for whale watching or merely taking in the fresh sea air and the scenery.
In and around town there are plenty of restaurants and coffee shops, art galleries and boutiques, not to mention the award-wining wineries of the Hemel en Aarde valley. Plus, for golf enthusiasts there are a number of excellent courses nearby.
It was an absolute pleasure visiting Whales Tale in this picturesque beachside haven. It offers excellent family-friendly accommodation - and we certainly hope to return for another holiday soon.
