I don't do rollercoasters. The thought of having my stomach flying around and my pulse racing frantically is enough for me to stand on the side and take pictures (at least someone gets a good shot for Instagram).
So when we were treated by my in-laws to go zip lining in Elgin my first thoughts were 'Woohoo, this is awesome' until a familiar knot of fear-fuelled anticipation kicked in. However, on this occasion my anxiety was completely misplaced, and at the end of the trip I left thinking that I'd love to do that again.
Cape Canopy Tours is set in the unspoilt Hottentots Holland nature reserve near Elgin. It just an hour's drive from Cape Town and well worth it if you are looking for an adventurous day out doing something a bit different.
The team is well organised and they start the tour off by giving you a comprehensive safety guide as well as an opportunity to pick your meal option for the end of the tour. We ate pies for lunch at Peregrine farm stall and so we chuckled when they read out the options of pies from the same farm stall. Their pies are delicious however and well worth eating twice in one day.
Once the safety briefing is done, you kit up into the 'only cool on some' gear and take a bumpy drive in the 4 x 4 to the top of the gorge.
Although the nerves kick in as you lock in to do the first zip, they are soon replaced with a joyous adrenaline rush and an awe inspiring view below. It becomes well worth it, even if you aren't the rollercoaster type like me.
There are 13 platforms, 11 zip lines and a swing bridge so the adventure is spread out over several hours and you feel like you have got your money's worth at the end of the day.
The guides were helpful and entertaining which added some knowledge and laughter to our day.
There is a 1km inclined walk back up to the 4x4 at the end of the tour but the guides walk at your pace and there is loads of flora to admire along the way. As the newest addition to the Canopy Tour family and boasting slides up to 320m long, it is well worth a visit.
