Newtown Cultural Precinct

Johannesburg

The Newtown Cultural Precinct, situated in the heart of Johannesburg, has become a tourist hotspot in past few years. The area, steeped in cultural history, had become neglected and run-down, but the Johannesburg City Council rejuvenated the area and Newtown is once again the creative capital of Johannesburg.

A large Victorian building, which houses the well known Market Theatre and the Museum Africa, is one of the main attractions in Newtown. Kippies, a jazz club on the doorstep of the Market Theatre, has played host to many South African jazz greats. For a day or night out head to Newtown, but remember to be safe and not to walk alone at night.
