East London Zoo

East London

Open in 1896 by Queen Victoria, the East London Zoo is located in the Queen's Park Botanical Gardens near East London's city centre. Located on 10 hectares of natural coastal forest, the gardens are filled with lush indigenous vegetation including many cycads.

The zoo was added to the park in the 1930's and the lion enclosure was added in 1959. The zoo is home to 38 bird species, 47 mammal species and 7 reptile species. The lion enclosure is now used to house a family of chimpanzees.
