Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift
BattlefieldsTwo famous historic battlefields lie very close to each other in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal. Isandlwana was the site of a famous battle on 22 January 1879 where 22 000 Zulu warriors defeated 1350 British troops in one of the first battles of the Anglo-Zulu War. To this date, the Battle of Isandlwana represents the greatest defeat for the British army by a native army.
Immediately after the victory at Isandlwana, the Zulus then attacked the mission station at Rorke’s Drift which lies just 16 kilometres away from Isandlwana. Here 150 British troops managed to defend the mission station from over 3000 Zulu warriors.
Tours of the two battlefields are run by a number of guiding companies telling the story of these monumental battles and the interesting history of the area.
