Spier

Stellenbosch

A visit to the Spier Estate in Stellenbosch encompasses far more than just wine tasting and visitors would be wise to set aside at least a few hours to relax and explore. Spier is one of the oldest wine farms in South Africa, with a recorded history dating back to 1692 – however the experience on offer is vibrant and contemporary and is sure to keep the whole family entertained.

Rolling lawns on the banks of the Eerste River are ideal for long picnic lunches with plenty of space for the kids to run around. Picnics need to be booked 24-hours in advance (visit www.spierpicnics.co.za). Alternatively, visit the innovative farm-to-table restaurant Eight where all of the produce served is harvested and reared on the estate or nearby estates. Brunches, harvest table lunches and delectable teas can be enjoyed.

For a unique African dining experience, moyo restaurant with its treetop tables, private tents and main dining tent offers a real variety of African dishes as well as music and entertainment.

For wine tastings, the new tasting venue is located on the banks of the Spier dam with stunning mountain views. Here award winning wines and innovative food pairings make for a unique tasting experience. Wine is available for sale at cellar door prices.

For groups of 8 or more a reservation is required. Groups will be accommodated in the Tasting Room at the Cow House. Bookings should be made and confirmed at least 48 hours in advance. Wine tastings are open daily from 10h00 to 16h00. Open for sales daily from 09h00 to 17h00.

Visitors can also experience birds of prey and learn about conservation at Eagle Encounters, or support local crafters at the Craft Market. And, for those wishing to make spend a few days in the winelands, the stylish 4-star Spier Hotel makes for a great base from which to explore further.
