This museum is rich in both cultural and natural history and makes for an interesting visit. It has unique collections and galleries that include birds, a thorough mollusc collection and a life size T-Rex model as well as a life size recreation of rock art drawings in a Drakensberg Cave. There are 8 natural history collections, 10 cultural history collections and a room dedicated to Kwa-Zulu Natal history.

Other facilities include a library and Internet Café.

Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 08h15 to 16h30, Saturdays from 09h00 to 16h00 and Sundays from 10h00 to 15h00.

Entrance fees are R10 for adults (over 17 years), R2.50 for children (4 to 17 years) and free for pensioners and children under age 4. School pupils on tour are R1.50 per child.
