This area was home to King Dingane and the Zulu Kingdom during his 11 year rule from 1829 to 1838. There is said to be about 1700 huts here, which could hold about 7000 people. King Dingane’s hut could be found in the Isigodlo (royal area) and is said to be the largest of its kind.

After being defeated at the Battle of Ncome (Blood River) the King ordered that Mgungunlovu be destroyed, and it was subsequently burned down. Much of what we know about the area has been exposed through excavations.
