The Red Dune Route

Upington

The Red Dune Route covers the area from north of Upington all the way to the Namibian border. The dunes are red due to the high iron oxide levels found within the sand. The weather here is quite hot, daytime temperatures can become quite high so sunblock is a definite must, whereas night-time temperatures can drop below zero degrees Celsius.

This area is home to a vast variety of wildlife including gemsbok, springbok and black maned lion. Activities along the route include dune boarding, camel riding, 4x4 routes, game drives, guided walks and bird watching. You are also able to engage with the locals and experience local culture and customs as well as local cuisine.
