Marievale Bird Sanctuary
Heidelberg
Located east of Johannesburg, this popular sanctuary is a designated Important Bird Area (IBA SA021).
Over 240 bird species have recently been recorded here. There are over 65 species of water birds, including Reed Comorant, Red-knobbed Coot and Yellow-billed Duck. You may also spot Marsh Owl, Sand Martin, Yellow Wagtail, Slaty Egret and more.
There are 5 hides overlooking four pans as well as braai and picnic areas and restroom facilities.
Admission is free. Operating Hours: Summer 05h30 – 19h30, Winter 06h00 – 18h00.
