Bloemfontein Zoo

Bloemfontein

Well known for its wide collection of primates, the 15 ha Bloemfontein Zoo boasts 65 mammal species and a large range of birds. It is also home to the magnificent Big Five.

Situated in the heart of Bloemfontein, and established in 1906, this is a wonderful place for a family outing and also offers group tours with a guide. Here you a promised a full day of fun-filled activities.

In 2005 it was discovered that one of the resident chimpanzees, Charlie the chimp, had developed an unfortunate smoking habit after he began mimicking visitors that were smoking, however every effort was made to help Charlie kick the habit.

There is a small shop where you can purchase cool drinks and snacks, and picnics can be enjoyed on the lawn.

'Friends of the Bloemfontein Zoo' is a wonderful group that assists in the conservation of wildlife and breeding programs. One of the ways in which this group raises money for the zoo is through Zoo Snoozes where you visitors can enjoy a sleep over at the zoo, and have the opportunity to touch a cheetah.
