The Women’s Memorial

Bloemfontein

This memorial is dedicated to the memory of the mothers, women and children who passed away or suffered during the Anglo-Boer War. This was the first monument in the world to be dedicated to women and children and was unveiled on the 16th of December 1913.

The structure is impressive – a 37 m high obelisk made from sandstone. Along the walkway that leads to the memorial are memorial stones which commemorate all those who passed away in concentration camps during the Anglo- Boer War.
