Land-Based Whale Watching

Hermanus

The Overberg coastline in the Cape with its warm shallow water and sheltered bays offers the ideal conditions for whales and whale watching. Each year, between June and late October, hundreds of Southern Right Whales migrate from Antarctica to South Africa to have their babies and nurse their young. All along the coast from Hermanus up to Gordon’s Bay there are ample locations to stop and watch these magnificent giants of the sea as they play in the waves. Visitors may also see Humpback and Bryde’s whales.

Hermanus is said to offer the best land-based whale watching in the world and even has its own ‘Whale-crier’ who walks along the coast telling visitors of whale sightings. Visitors can often see whales within 5 – 10 metres of the cliff path.
