Shark Cage Diving

Gansbaai

South Africa offers visitors the opportunity to experience some of the world’s best shark cage diving. 8 kilometres off the coast of Gansbaai, near to Hermanus, the waters around Dryer Island are teeming with seals, penguins and seabirds, and this in turn attracts the fearsome Great White Shark. Great White Sharks are the ocean’s largest predatory fish, reaching up to 6 metres (20 feet) in length and powerful enough to launch their 1-ton bodies clear out of the water.

Although there are sharks in the waters year-round, the best time to view the sharks is between April and October when these stealthy creatures are focused on feeding on the seals and fish around Dryer Island. Cage diving provides an intense, up-close encounter with these giant predators and, the adrenaline rush of a lifetime as the specially constructed floating metal cage is lowered into the water. For the less adventurous, boat based viewing is also extremely rewarding as the sharks often approach and circle the boat allowing for excellent opportunities for photographs.
