On the banks of the Orange River and in the Friendly N6 region of the Eastern Cape is Aliwal North. The town is en-route to Bloemfontein in the Free State and was occupied by the Boers during the Anglo-Boer war. Today the town is a busy agricultural hub with wool, beef, maize and dairy being the major products.
One of the main attractions of the town are two hot mineral springs that produce millions of litres of hot and 'healing' water each day. There are a number of museums and sites of historical interest in the area as well as ancient San rock paintings found in nearby caves.
