Not far from the historic town of Grahamstown is the town of Bathurst –founded in 1820 by Lord Bathurst. The town is home to a number of interesting memorials and monuments associated with the 1820 settlers, including a Methodist and an Anglican church both of which have been declared national monuments.

Bathurst is also the ‘pineapple capital of South Africa’ and is the centre of an extensive pineapple-growing industry. The town is only 15km away from the beaches of Port Alfred as is nearby to many surrounding game reserves. Outdoor activities abound including hiking, fishing and birding and there are also curio and craft shops to visit and explore.
