Further inland from East London and on the upper reaches of the Buffalo River is King Williams Town. Originally established as a mission station in 1824, the station was destroyed by the Xhosa and was subsequently declared King Williams Town by Governor Sir Benjamin D'Urban in 1834. The territory was later returned to the Xhosa but remained a popular trading post.

The town is home to a number of museums and monuments including the Steve Biko Garden of Remembrance, and various outdoor activities such as trout and bass fishing, hiking and walking and nearby nature and game reserves.
