In the heart of the Great Karoo and surrounded by mountains, Middelburg is renowned for the abundance of herbal plant life which grows naturally in the surrounding veld. The town was founded in the 1850’s as a Dutch Reformed Parish and great supplies of underground water has allowed for a green oasis in the heart of the dry Karoo.

Ancient fossils have been found here as well as rock art from the early San Bushmen. Conditions are ideal for hang gliding and paragliding with hot air thermals and plenty of open airspace and other eco- and adventure activities can also be enjoyed from abseiling to hiking and 4x4 trails.
