The small town of Nieu Bethesda at the foot of the Kompasberg is one where time has truly stood still. The town was made famous by playwright Athol Fugard in the movie “The Road to Mecca” which features the Owl House created by eccentric Helen Martins. Sculptures of owls in all shapes and sizes and all manner of creatures sculpted from cement and glass adorn what has now been made into a museum – attracting more than 15 000 tourists every year.

There are various art and craft centres to visit, or simply breathe in the fresh air in these tranquil surroundings or enjoy a donkey cart tour of the village.
