The Northern Region is markedly different to the rest of the Eastern Cape. The Ukhahlamba mountains, named after the Xhosa word for 'barrier of spears', form part of the Drakensberg mountain range and welcome visitors into a breath-taking landscape. The mountains are snowcapped in winter and are home to the only ski resort in South Africa, Tiffindell. Outdoor activities are plentiful with trout fishing, horse trails, mountain biking and hikes into the surrounding mountains.

Trekboere, a group of pastoral farmers, settled in the area during the 19th century and set up the sheep and cattle farms which today are still the main industry in the area. The towns echo this quaint, farming feel and the new N6 Tourism route covering over 600 kilometres connects these wonderful towns together.
