Topograhically different to the rest of the province, the Eastern Free State is located where the Maluti Mountains meet the Drakensberg. The Basotho people made use of these mountains as hideaways and for defence from enemies.

The area features many charming towns, undulating hills, and offers great fly fishing and bird watching. Farms in the area create a quiet and relaxing atmosphere in the shadow of the majestic Maluti Mountains.

The mountainous Eastern Free State offers many great outdoor activities including visiting the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. The park is named after the golden hue that is cast on the sandstone rocks. Here you can view a variety of animals including Black Wildebeest, Eland, Oribi and Burchell's Zebra or go to a cultural village and learn about the native Basotho people.
