Situated south of the Vaal River, the Northern Free State is well-watered with rivers and man-made dams. The landscape features hilly grasslands and grain farms, with vast areas of Cosmos blooming in summer to create a mass of pastel colours.

The area is popular with water-sports enthusiasts and Gauteng residents as it is just a short drive and offers a rustic and rural atmosphere. Water activities include water skiing, boating, fly fishing and river rafting. It is also possible to explore the area on foot and there are some great hiking opportunities including visiting the Vredefort Dome, the World Heritage Site where a meteor struck the earth creating a 300 kilometre wide crater.
