Southern Gauteng is home to the Vaal River, which is the main source of water to Gauteng and Northern Free State. Built in 1922 the Loch Vaal reservoir pumps over a billion litres daily to the surrounding areas. The slow-flowing Vaal River is an ideal water sports playground with fishermen and skiers alike enjoying this beautiful, winding river.

The region also borders the Suikerbosrand, an area of unspoilt highveld. The area offers many different hiking trails with the opportunity to see a wide variety of wildlife in the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve.
