The area of Western Gauteng lies largely unspoilt and rural, with a large part of the area being farmlands and smallholdings. The Magaliesburg and Witwatersberg meet and create beautiful hills and koppies that break from the relative flatness of the Gauteng area. There are many great hiking opportunities in the area on the various mountains, and in the Skeerpoort and Crocodile River valleys.
Head out to Western Gauteng for a day in the country away from the big business of Johannesburg. Here you can enjoy the Crocodile Ramble, an arts and crafts route that runs through Western Gauteng into the North West Province. Visit cheese farms, art galleries, nature reserves, rose farms, and a number of restaurants.
Mrs. Ples, one of the oldest human skeletons, was found here and the site is called the Cradle of Humankind. The Sterkfontein Caves are another major attraction where visitors can view the interesting rock formations. Offering fresh outdoor relaxation is the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens with many beautiful plants and a waterfall.
