Kokstad is a small rural community on the outer slopes of the Drankensberg in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

The town was formed when a group of displaced Griquas settled here after splitting away from their tribe and travelling over the Drakensberg. The modern town is not where the original settlement was however; as in 1869 a Reverend Dower agreed to set up a missionary station on the proviso that the town moved to a more suitable place near to the banks of the Mzimhlava River. The town is 1,302 m above the sea level and has Mount Currie, at a height of 2224 m, standing guard over it.

Popular activities while staying in the town include visiting the Kokstad Museum, St Patrick's Cathedral, The Adam Kok III Memorial and the Mount Currie Nature Reserve where visitors you can spot a number of antelope species. There are also a number of beautiful dams in the area for those fishing and birding enthusiasts.
