When settlers arrived in the 1800's and moved inland they found great sweeping hills with good weather and fertile soil. These lands were however part of the Zulu Kingdom and would be fought over for years by both the Zulus, the Voortrekkers and the British. The Battlefields are a concentration of many of the historical battles fought in South Africa including the battles at Isandlawana and Rorkes Drift.

The rolling plains of northern and central KwaZulu Natal are littered with the evidence of these battles with monuments, graveyards, and the remains of stone forts. Visitors can join a guided tour of the area, or use maps and brochures to visit places of interest.
