Home to South Africa's largest herd of elephant, the Elephant Coast is considered by many to be the eco-tourism gem of KwaZulu Natal. The untamed wilderness of the area offers the perfect backdrop for many unforgettable adventures. The Elephant Coast has many game reserves including the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, the oldest game park in Africa, where visitors can view the Big 5.
Stretching from St. Luica in the south up to the Mozambican border, the Elephant Coast has 21 different ecosystems with well over 2000 different plant species. From sand dunes to swamps, coastal forests to savanna grassland, the region is incredibly diverse with the largest protected wetland in southern Africa, iSimangaliso Wetland Park. The area is rich in adventure with horse trails, game viewing and birding, hiking, or scuba diving in the warm Indian Ocean.
Humpback and Southern Right Whales migrate to the Elephant Coast from July to December. They move into the natural nurseries along the coast to mate and nurse their young babies. In the summer months sea turtles come onto the beaches to nest.
