The breathtakingly beautiful Midlands region is situated inland between the provincial capital of Pietermaritzburg and the slopes of the Southern Drakensberg. The Midlands is known for its rivers, lakes and waterfalls with some great bass and trout fishing in the well stocked rivers and dams. The landscape is a combination of green rolling pasture lands and forests that offer many great hiking and horse riding trails.

Many creatives have moved to the Midlands and formed a wonderful arts and crafts route known as the Midlands Meander. The route passes through the historical towns of the Midlands, showcasing the many art galleries and boutique stores brimming with local handmade products.

The Midlands has a many great nature reserves with breath-taking views and picnic spots. The Albert Falls Dam Nature Reserve has numerous nature trails and bass fishing, the Loteni Nature Reserve is a popular trout fishing spot, and the Kamberg Nature Reserve with its incredible scenery and great picnic spots.
