Named after the Tropic of Capricorn which crosses the region, Capricorn is a mix of bushveld, misty mountains with forest and dams, and grassy plains. The area is very rich in history with many cultural villages, San rock art, and prehistoric archaeological sites. History in the area of Capricorn extends from the Stone Age, to the Iron age, to European migration and the wars that ensued.

The town of Polokwane was founded during the 1880's and now stands as the economic hub of the area. The area is popular for hiking, game viewing, and 4x4 adventures with unique routes through the area's dramatic landscape.
