Thabazimbi, meaning 'mountain of iron' drew its name from the rich deposits of iron ore that were discovered in 1919 and which led to the rapid development of the town. Today Thabazimbi is still a rich source of ore with one of the largest mining shafts in Africa.

The surrounding area is scenically beautiful and the Marakele National Park to the northeast of the town is situated in the heart of the spectacular Waterberg Mountains. This is an outdoor enthusiasts haven with hiking and 4x4 trails, fishing, game viewing and excellent bird watching to be enjoyed. Marakele, the Tswana word for 'place of sanctuary', is also home to the largest colony of the endangered Cape Vulture - with over 800 breeding pairs.
