The town of Barberton falls into the Wild Frontiers region of the Mpumalanga province – a region rich in geological discoveries and bordering Mozambique, Swaziland and the southernmost part of the Kruger National Park. Barberton was at the centre of the gold rush in the early 1880’s and several buildings from the early boom years have survived - including the façade of Africa’s first stock exchange, built in 1887.
Standing proudly in front of the town hall is a bronze statue of Jock of the Bushveld, made famous by the highly acclaimed stories written by Percy Fitzpatrick of his adventures with his dog Jock. The area is rich in its flora and is home to the Barberton daisy and a number of nature reserves – as well as providing endless opportunities for outdoor activities and adventure sports from micro-lighting and paragliding to 4x4 trails, walking, hiking, mountain biking and horse riding.
