Known as ‘the Garden Town’ Ermelo is lush and green due to the high rainfall in the area and the town’s close proximity to the Vaal River. Ermelo is a popular fly-fishing area with several nearby dams to choose from. The Leghoya Stone Huts on the Tafelkop Mountains; dating back to the 14th Century; are also interesting, while visitors can also marvel at the San paintings located on the Welgelegen farm.

Ermelo is the educational, industrial and commercial centre of a 7750m² area where several large mines provide South Africa’s only source of Anthracite and Torbanite. A productive farming area, Ermelo is an important center for beef and sheep farming, as well as sunflowers, grain and potatoes.
