Machadodorp is known for its temperate climate and superb trout fishing waters. There is also an excellent fly-fishing shop in the village where you can purchase all your tackle. The Elands River runs through the town and the natural sulphur is said to have healing properties. A resort called the Sulphur Springs Resort has been created to harness the waters potential and make it available for everyone. A monthly Craft Market is hosted at the Riverside Fly Fishing Park on the last Saturday of each Month where quality arts and crafts can be purchased and visitors can experience the warm hospitality of the locals.
Machadodorp is a historically interesting village. President Kruger ran his parliament here for 3 weeks during the Boer War in the 1900’s. There is also a very interesting Boer War Grave Yard at the outskirts of the village. Machadodorp was named after Joachim Machado the Portuguese surveyor and Governor of Mozambique who established the route of the railway line from Maputo to Pretoria.
