With its rich Anglo-Boer war history the area is filled with old forts and historic towns such as Pilgrim's Rest. The quaint stone villages of this region offer a quiet and relaxed atmosphere with great trout fishing opportunities in the town of Dullstroom.

The area Blyde River Canyon offers many beautiful vistas of the rolling mountains and cliffs of the area. The landscape is a mix of rock faces, indigenous forest, and cool streams that run off into breath-taking waterfalls. Seasonal grasslands, proteas, wild flowers and orchids add to the beauty of the escarpment. The canyon has many popular hiking trails up the scenic mountains and through the forests.

Wildlife including leopard, caracal, kudu and other antelope are indigenous to the area. Bird watching is also very popular with the Verloren Vallei Nature reserve having the Blue, Wattled and Crowned Crane all in one habitat.
