The Highveld and Cosmos area is known as the 'energy belt' and is one of the country's most productive areas generating electricity for most of Southern Africa. With highly mineral rich ground, the region has many mines including the largest underground coal mining complex in the world.

The area is, however, also home to numerous nature reserves including the Loskop Dam Nature Reserve and the Botshabelo Nature Reserve, both of which offer great birding and game viewing opportunities.

Agriculture is also important in the area with maize and grain farming as well as cattle and sheep farms. The Ndebele people live here, and are known for their vibrant and colourful houses and beadwork. In the summer time the open grasslands are transformed when the cosmos and arum lilies turn this region into a beautiful carpet of colour.
