Located in the Grass & Wetlands region of Mpumalanga, Wakkerstroom is a bird-watchers delight and falls into an important wetland system. The wetland is home to a vast variety of birds, including all three Crane species and a number of endemic bird species.

Located in the southernmost part of Mpumalanga, Wakkerstoom is on the border of both the Free State and Kwazulu-Natal and the rail link between Johannesburg and the harbour at Durban runs just outside of town.
