Set in the Highlands Meander region, Waterval-Boven meaning ‘above the waterfall’ takes its name from the cascading waterfalls on the nearby Elands River. Cutting through the Drakensberg escarpment, the Elands River is closely followed by both the road and railway that adhere to its course.

The construction of the railway from Pretoria to Maputo in Mozambique cost hundreds of lives as the fever struck those working on the line and Waterval-Boven is home to a memorial for the many men and women who died. Also in the area are an old tunnel, tracks and bridge that are national monuments and offer a glimpse into the early days of the railroads.
