Situated in the middle of the Karoo veld and surrounded by little koppies, Colesberg is exactly half way between Cape Town and Johannesburg on the N1 making it the ideal place to stop over and rest during the long drive between the two major towns.
Coleskop is the most famous koppie in the area, and can be seen from a distance of over 40 kilometre. Early travellers called it "Towerberg" ("Magic Mountain"). The curious thing about this koppie is that as you travel towards it, it never seems to get nearer.
Colesberg is in sheep farming country and is home to many of South Africa's top merino farms. A popular attraction when in the area is a visit to the Doornkloof Nature Reserve which is home to various small game such as Steenbuck, bat-eared fox and brown hyena.
