In the 1800's the world's greatest diamond rush came to South Africa. At one stage over 30 000 diggers where working day and night in the area surrounding Kimberley. The diggers have gone, but the legacy of the diamond mines remain with the old buildings and museums giving visitors an insight into the way of life for many prospectors. The area is also the place of battles between the Boers and the British as they both looked to get this diamond rich area which yielded around 14.5 million carats of diamonds.
