Beaufort West is the largest town in the Karoo and was founded in 1818 by the governor of the Cape, Lord Charles Somerset. A handsome Neo-Gothic Dutch Reformed Mother Church, with its tall, white spire is the landmark of the town and well worth a visit. The town also has many other beautiful buildings from different architectural styles of the past.

Being the first municipality in the Western Cape, Beaufort West offers visitors the ideal base to explore the Karoo and its history. Doctor Chris Barnard came from Beaufort West and his legacy is felt at Barnard House and Old Town Hall, where there is a replica of the heart-transplant theatre he used. Considered one of the world's richest fossil areas, Beaufort West is also a popular holiday destination for archeology lovers.

A visit to the Karoo will leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed. All your worries will be whisked away as you marvel at this desolate yet spectacularly beautiful area.
