West Coast

With its many quaint fishing villages and unspoilt quiet beaches, the West Coast offers a friendly and peaceful escape. The coastline transforms in spring time when the west coast landscape is carpeted with the bright yellow and purple colours of the Namaqualand daisies.

As you go up the coast you will encounter the rugged Cederberg mountain range with its many hiking trails and centuries old rock-art. The fertile valleys of the Cederberg are home to a large citrus farming industry, which becomes a hive of activity during the harvest time in winter. The Cederberg is also the only place in the world where the rooibos plant is found.

The west coast is well known for its fresh seafood including snoek, mussels, crayfish and local 'bokkoms', a salted mullet which is strung up and left to dry. A popular fishing spot is the Langebaan Lagoon although the whole coastline offers good fishing opportunities. For those who don't want to catch the fish themselves, the local fishermen sell their fresh catch of the day from the harbour or alongside the road.
