(38 customer reviews)
Just over an hour’s drive from Cape Town, Welbedacht Game & Nature Reserve offers a stunning retreat in the countryside. The Reserve is just below the magnificent Winterhoek Mountains and offers a tranquil environment, nature walks, and an abundance of bird life, fauna and flora and spectacular views of the Tulbagh valley.
The amply equipped, self-catering cottages are tucked away between fynbos and pine trees and are all spaced well apart. They have shady verandas with mountain water plunge pools, log fireplaces and braai places as well as fresh linen and towels and a supply of firewood.
Activities and attractions:
Walk the nature trails: There are several marked walking trails which meander through the fynbos, rhenosterveld and wetland areas of the reserve. The trails vary from 15 minutes to 2 hours.
Swim in the dam: There is a large dam for swimming which is within walking distance of all units. The dam is surrounded by lush brush and trees and an abundance of bird life.
Fishing: There is a second, smaller dam which is suitable for Bass fishing.
Go mountain biking: There are many different trails and tracks for mountain bikers and these are maintained and managed by the Tulbagh Mountain Bike Club. Trails on Welbedacht are free to use for our mountain biking guests - additional outside trails are available for which a permit can be obtained.
Explore the labyrinth: This unique labyrinth is beautifully integrated into its environment, a forest of blue gum trees, and is a wonderful space to feel a sense of connection with nature.
View the wild life: A large variety of fauna, such as pole cats, caracal, cape fox and numerous buck species inhabit the Reserve, and it is also home to herds of springbok, zebra and wildebeest which form part of a program for re-introduction of game.
Go birding: Between tall, leafy trees that provide shelter, to the fynbos with its vast variety of plant life and the savannah wetland grasses that provide an abundant food source for dozens of species of raptors and hundreds of other species, Welbedacht is a veritable haven for birds and bird watchers alike.
Go horse riding: Just 5 minutes’ drive from Welbedacht, on one of our neighbouring farms, you can ride through farmland and orchards, or a little further afield you can explore specially created mountain trails with magnificent views of the mountains and valley. All levels of riders are welcome. Booking details will be referred.
Take in the historic town of Tulbagh: 10 minutes’ drive from Welbedacht is the historic town of Tulbagh. Take a stroll down Church Street which boasts a wealth of Cape Dutch Architecture, several restaurants and stores, a museum and monuments. Olive groves, vineyards and orchards can be found in the surrounding areas, making Tulbagh a delight for fruit and wine lovers.
Just rest & relax: Here, away from the hustle and bustle of living, you may just find that all you long for is a book and a quiet, shady spot. You may wish to find a peaceful nook, let go of all distractions and immerse yourself in the immense beauty of the surrounding nature.
