From June to August the very popular annual 'Sardine Run' takes place - great excitement in scooping up these little fish as they beach, or just watching the amazing bird life that dip and dive after the catch. The famous Aliwal Shoal, a short distance south, provides an exceptional diving paradise.
The town is renowned for its safe, scenic beaches. Inyoni Rock and Pipeline Beach are much frequented by sun-loving holiday makers. The local traffic department have their auspicious headquarters in the fully restored homestead of one of the province's most enduring icons, Dick King. The self-guided Loerie, Mpiti and Mongoose trails start near the town centre and visit the preserved riverbank area. Picnic and barbeques are permitted. Situated in Umgeni Road and is open daily is the Amanzimototi Bird Sanctuary. Entry is free and they offer perfect picnic spots and bird watching with tea, scones and crumpets served at the kiosk on weekends. Rogies Park on the Inyoni Rocks beach in Beach Road has swings and slides for the children. A flea market is held in the park on the last Sunday of every month. Amanzimtoti covers a vast area and includes amongst others Isipingo, Prospecton, Athlone Park, Umbogintwini, Amanzimtoti, KwaMakhutha, Doonside, Kingsburgh, Winklespruit, Illovo Beach, Umgababa and Umkomaas.
