The cottage is beautifully furnished and a wonderful view over the dam towards the hills. Cattle and sheep grazing peacefully in the fields.
WOW what a great stay! "

Caring and loving people. A lot of highlights that you will not always get - the dog had babies, die kinders het appelkose gepluk en vir ons gegee. Although it is a working farm, the atmosphere were peacefull and quiet. I do not have words to describe our wonderfull stay at this farm."

"4 stars for Walkabout Guest Farm"

Nina Zylstra

"We loved our weekend on this working farm, for young and old there is much fun to be had. We were lucky enough to be there when there was a litter of puppies, an orphaned calf, a cupboard full of kittens and an aviary full of tiny coloured birds. Thank you Grant for the big-hearted hospitality."

"We LOVED this place. It's on a gorgeous, safe sheep farm and the lodge was perfect! Sleeps 6 easily but we had 4 adults and 3 kids with no problems. Deck overlooks the small dam and there is a little boat to go out in which the kids loved. We fished and had a blast! Every afternoon we helped (or hindered!) the farmer in bringing the mother sheep and baby lambs in for safe keeping, and we fed and bathed the orphan lambs that they look after. Played in the bird cages with lots of beautiful types of birds, went rock/mountain climbing, and enjoyed farm life. It was out of the way and there are no coffee shops down the road but we went for a day trip into clarens - about 45mins and Ficksburg was close enough to duck in for supplies. I would absolutely stay here again. Thanks to Anna for assisting the kids with the lambs and to Grant for opening his farm to us to wxperience."

"Thank you Grant & Charmain for your excellent service and care when we stayed in your thatched cottage for a few days. It was clean, neat, peaceful and well equipped. We lacked nothing. It was a pleasure to wake up to a working farm, hearing the sheep, cows and chickens. And in all that the cottage was far enough not to be disturbed. We looked over our own dam - tranquility! The cottage faces North and is very well insulated. We were there in the middle of winter, with a big log fire burning every night, sipping our red wine.......... we will be back!

"My husband, my little boy of nearly three and I have recently enjoyed a most fabulous time at the Walkabout Estate Guest Farm. It is located in a beautiful part of the Free State and the farm is easy to access, but you still feel that you are miles away from anyone...food for the soul.

We stayed in the smaller cottage linked to the house but it was spacious, very comfortable and spotlessly clean. There are loads of interesting things to do on the farm and our little boy had a ball catching crabs, looking at all the animals, watching the tractors and playing with Grant and Charmaine's two girls.

The family made us feel totally welcome and part of their family, but at the same time respected that we also wanted to spend time alone. We found the rates exceptional value-for-money and wanted to stay another two nights, but unfortunately other people were booked to arrive. Overall, a wonderful holiday and we will certainly be visiting the farm again."

We were in the accommodation attached to the house which was private and quiet although the beds aren't great and the red bath in the bathroom is off putting!

We had dinner and breakfast, both of which were filling and delicious."

"1) The booking process:- Having been extremely frustrated previously when tryng to find rural private home B&B accomodation in past years it was great to find a site with clear geographic directions and an unambigious booking process. Booking confirmation was recieved both from the site and the establishment.
2) The place:
Walkabout is a warm and friendly place both in the location and the hosts.
The farm is close enough to good roads for accessibility in a small hatch-back car but remote enough from all highways to have a authentic rural feel about it. Bev and I spent some time 'listening' to the silence. We were somewhat envious of the guests who had booked the separate cottage overlooking the dam but were very happy with the quality and condition of the attached accomodation.
3) The service: Magriet(?) was very obliging with her service and we ate basically but well for both the meals that we had. The cottage was spacious and comfortable. The value for money was excellent.

All in all Bev & I will certainly revisit Walkabout and probably spend several nights next time. "

"Just a few kilometres from Ficksburg is the Walkabout Estate, nestled in a most beautiful picturesque part of the country. The B&B has a separate entrance on the side of the main stone dwelling with its own courtyard. The main room has a double bed and a bunk bed with a small lounge/sitting area which was more than adequate for my party of three. The kitchen is well equipped with a small table perfect for three of us to eat at. The bathroom has a large bath, no shower.

The hosts were warm and welcoming, even the dogs made us feel at home. Margriet whipped up a delicious breakfast for us fruit, cereals, cake, bacon, sausage, eggs, toast, excellent coffee...a meal fit to keep us going all day!

This is such a beautiful picturesque setting on a working farm. You could walk forever in any direction or just sit peacefully under the trees and be mesmerised by the sheep and cattle chomping their way through the day.

Most enjoyable!"

Outside security lights that were left on all night were a bit disconcerting and uncomfortable as it meant that the curtains had to be drawn which in turn made it very stuffy during a hot and humid night."

"The accomodation was excellent, with a beatiful view. It is very private, a short distance from the town itself and I will recommend it to anyone looking for a weekend or even longer breakaway. The cottage was clean and all the necessary utenils and facilities were available."
